What is TPM?
TPM stands for Total Productive Maintenance with participation of every party. The principle of TPM is originated from Preventive Maintenance (PM) and has been developed ever since. The principle is based on maintenance of machine to be operable as required by users with the use of Time Base Maintenance, Condition Base Maintenance and Maintenance Prevention that is change of machine to be easier for maintenance and to have longer use period. However, the machine is still broken and needs great deal of money for maintenance.
The idea for maintenance to prevent the machine from breaking down starts from checking to find decomposing of parts before such machine is broken. Therefore, an expert in this field who can detect the damage is needed to do the test. The person who can do this job the best is the operator. Later, the maintenance has been developed to Autonomous Maintenance that is a unique feature of TPM.
However, maintenance to keep number of broken machine zero is not sufficient. TPM, therefore, aims to World Class Manufacturing adding another 8 activities that are 8 pillars of TPM.
